McCrory Stores or (J.G. McCrory's) was a beloved chain of five and dime stores in the United States. John McCrorey opened his first McCrory store in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, in 1882.  (Woolworth opened in 1879 and were direct competitors throughout their history). The stores typically sold shoes, clothing, housewares, fabrics, penny candy, toys, cosmetics, and often included a lunch counter or snack bar.   By 1989, McCrory was operating 1,300 stores.  Unfortunately, in the early 1990's competition from Target and Walmart affected McCrory's and by 1992 the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A fun fact, Mr. McCrorey dropped the "e" from his last name to avoid paying for extra letters on his store signs.
