Gabbeh Rug

Gabbeh rugs are traditionally woven by Gashgai and Lori nomads in the Fars province near Shiraz, Iran. Originally created for sleeping due to their thick, insulating pile, these rugs feature a unique, grainy texture resulting from the use of uneven, hand-spun, lanolin-rich wool.

Many Gabbehs come in natural shades of cream, brown, and gray. However, colors like red, yellow, green, and blue are also used and are derived from plant-based dyes. Most Gabbehs are simple in design, but when motifs are included, they depict stylized scenes from nomadic life—goats, camels, dogs, plants, and people are common themes.
