What is Hugo Kamishi Akadama?

The Hugo Kamishi Akadama substrate was formed from volcanic clay and has been traditionally used over many years by expert bonsai growers in Japanese culture. This substrate is fantastic for use with aquatic plants as it helps the plant roots to grip, helping the growth of the plants.

Key features:

  • Used by expert bonsai growers
  • Formed from volcanic clay
  • Lowers pH and KH of water
  • Provides nutrients through roots of plants
  • Can be layered with gravel for the desired effect
  • Helps aquatic plants take root and thrive

What are the benefits of this substrate?

Due to its ability to retain water and nutrients it is perfect to help nurture your aquascapes and will cause your microfauna to thrive.

Thanks to its porosity it will provide very good water circulation and will also lower the pH and KH of the water.

How do you use this substrate?

To use this substrate, first, you’ll need to layer the Hugo Kamishi Akadama and over the top, layer any large-grain gravel or plant substrate, sealing the nutrients and stopping them from escaping. Then you have the option to layer any small-grain gravel over the top as decoration, but this step can be missed if you’re satisfied with the appearance of the first and second layers alone.
