The Distance Between: Some Races Last a Lifetime

The Distance Between offers a compelling journey into athletic rivalry across impossible divides. Beginning during the Cold War and unfolding across decades, this novel follows American Jack Thomas, who discovered his extraordinary talent on the dusty backroads of his Iowa farm, and Soviet Ivan Morozov, who found liberation from Kazan's industrial smog in his relentless pursuit of athletic excellence. Their parallel rise to becoming history's greatest milers—breaking records on opposite sides of an Iron Curtain—forges a connection that transcends borders. As geopolitics disrupts athletic competition, principles and sacrifice come into sharp focus. Readers experience these athletes' complete journeys—from solitary training to mud-soaked cross country battles to the thrill of a devastating kick down the backstretch of a 1500 meter final. Throughout their stories, questions emerge: What happens when dreams are deferred? How do we measure achievement when competitions fall victim to politics? And what possibilities arise when fate finally brings long-separated rivals face to face?A meditation on rivalry, resilience, and redemption, The Distance Between will resonate with anyone who has paused at a fork in the road—quietly recognizing that the path with the gentle incline may offer comfort, but it's along the more demanding trail where our true character emerges through the honest effort of each difficult mile.
