🌿 Utricularia graminifolia Vitro Culture® – Bright Green Foreground Carpet Plant

Sold as: 4-inch sealed Vitro Culture® bag or 2.5-inch cup (depending on availability)

Utricularia graminifolia, commonly known as UG or Grass-leaved Bladderwort, is one of the most popular foreground plants in aquascaping. Famous for its soft, grass-like appearance, UG forms a dense, bright green carpet that brings a natural meadow effect to planted tanks. Despite belonging to the bladderwort family (carnivorous plants), UG is completely safe for aquariums—even for newborn baby shrimp—as its tiny traps only target microscopic organisms.

This plant is especially valued in nano tanks, Iwagumi layouts, and Nature-style aquascapes for its compact size, fluffy texture, and vibrant green coloration.

🌟 Key Features:

  • Scientific Name: Utricularia graminifolia

  • Synonyms: Utricularia graminifolia Vahl

  • Common Name: UG, Grass-leaved Bladderwort

  • Family: Lentibulariaceae

  • Leaf Color: Bright green

  • Growth Form: Dense, stolon-forming carpet

  • Unique Trait: Safe for fish and shrimp—even baby shrimp—despite being a carnivorous species

🌱 Growth & Propagation:

  • Lighting Needs: Medium–high lighting for compact growth

  • CO₂ & Fertilizers: Recommended for best results

  • Growth Method: Spreads through fine stolons, forming a continuous carpet

  • Nutrient Substrate: Required – thrives in nutrient-rich, fine-grain soil

  • Can Be Grown Emersed: Yes, especially effective with the Dry Start Method (DSM) for rapid establishment

  • Water Parameters: 72–82°F (22–28°C), pH 6.0–7.5

Propagation occurs naturally through runners, allowing UG to fill the foreground with lush greenery once established.

🖼️ Aquascaping Benefits:

  • Creates a lawn-like carpet in the foreground of aquascapes

  • Perfect for nano tanks and Iwagumi layouts

  • Adds a fluffy, bright green contrast against stone and driftwood

  • Harmless and shrimp-safe, making it ideal for community and shrimp tanks
